It’s the 21st century and work doesn’t always happen inside an office building. With your connected devices, you can work from anywhere in the world. Staying productive and working smarter—not necessarily harder—is what we’re here to help with. Whether you’re checking your email while traveling or you’re a full-time digital nomad, check out our favorite tools for working remotely.
Finding spaces
When you’re in a new city and need to find a place to work, you’re going to want these 2 apps on your phone. WorkFrom helps you find coffee shops, cafes, bars, coworking and other work-friendly spaces in 700 cities around the world. All the locations listed are ones recommended by other remote workers.
Breather is more like the Uber of finding meeting spaces. You can rent spaces to work by the hour or for a full day. It’s currently in North American cities but you’re going to want to keep your eye on it as it expands.
Virtual meetings
If you can’t have a physical meeting, cyberspace is the next best (rent-free) place! Although Skype is a popular option, we find it drops calls and isn’t as reliable. Instead, consider trying one of these awesome platforms: GoToMeeting (screen sharing is easy, call quality is really good), Join.Me (free and easy to use), and Zoom (can screen share on mobile). After all, you don’t want to be embarrassed in front of clients or colleagues trying to figure out your video chat system.
If you’re looking to keep in touch quickly with coworkers, Slack and HipChat are great messenger tools with video call functions too. They come with mobile apps so you can easily get a hold of your colleagues without giving out your personal number.
Organizing work
Keeping your work organized with coworkers across the globe is easy using cloud-based tools like DropBox, and Google Drive. Depending on your storage needs, Google Drive offers more free storage—starting at 15 GB, compared to DropBox’s 2GB.
Another basic tool not to underestimate is Evernote. You can create project to-do lists, share ideas and get feedback. If you’re willing to pay a bit more you can annotate PDFs, scan and digitize business cards, and forward emails into Evernote.
If you’re looking for more project-management tools, Asana (plays nice with Dropbox, Google Drive, and many other apps), Trello (good for assigning projects), and JIRA (better for software teams) are popular platforms and some of our personal favorites.
Pro Tip: Use a VPN like TunnelBear while working remotely to keep all your data encrypted and secure.
